How-To Save Money in Your Home: Remove Your Carpet
Removing your carpet is a great way to save on your electric bill. When I removed the carpet in my home and installed tile, I noticed that the average indoor temperature was much cooler, especially in the summer, than what it was when I initially had the carpet. The average indoor temperature in the summer months was approximately five to ten degrees cooler. I also noticed that by using large area rugs for the living and family rooms during the winter that the house warmed up slightly while also reducing the echoing noise carried within the walls of the house if I didn’t have the large area rugs. By adjusting the thermostat to match the new temperature change, this resulted in my air conditioner and heater units being used less often and my electric bill being significantly reduced on each utility statement.
Here’s an important note. My home is located in a hotter climate and a carpet-less floor is very energy efficient. However, if your home is located in a cooler climate; one that receives cooler temperatures, then keeping the floors covered with either carpet or large area rugs, would be a better idea. The carpet or large area rugs will then work as an insulator and heat retainer that will reduce your heating bill by helping to insulate the inside of your home while also help to retain the warm ambient air inside of your home.
