1. Protected against the latest known security threats. Back in the days of GeoCities and AskJeeves, it would sometimes take weeks or even months for cms developers to iron out all the bugs encountered by users running a particular update; however, that was the 90’s and times have changed. Being in the 21st century we have seen the rise of major cms platforms such as Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress. With WordPress as large as it is and with an increasingly number of users testing its updates, identifying and diagnosing security threats can sometimes happen overnight. Gone are the days of having to cross your fingers upon installing a new update. Though no matter how far into the future we are you should always run the update on a test site prior to installing it on a live site.
  2. Access to new features. Updates can bring with them a host of new features to help you on your way to becoming a content generating jedi. It is not uncommon for a plugin to make its way into core or for a premium theme to make its way into the WordPress theme repository. New features are only available through the release of updates and whether or not you choose to download and install them. If you do decide to utilize a new update, then be prepared to stay one step ahead of websites using older WordPress versions while leaving your competition in the dust.
  3. Access to the latest stable WordPress version. Have you ever visited a site that appeared to be visually broken? Nothing is more annoying than visiting a site where half of the content is pushed off the page and into the abyss. You can avoid that amateurish technicality on your site by staying up to date with the latest WordPress version. It is also a good idea to run periodic tests on themes and plugins on a test site prior to installing them on a live site to help prevent activation errors.
  4. Access to the latest supported WordPress version. If you do encounter an error on your site, it is much easier for other WordPress users to help diagnose the problem when you are running the latest WordPress version and not a version that was last updated a decade ago.
