How to Save Money on Your Property: Grow a Vegetable Garden
We have just started a garden at the home we are in and love it. There are no more trips needed to take to the store for much of our food, minus the occasional garden seeds and mulch. We currently grow around five to eight different types of vegetables, depending on the season we are in of course. Also depending on the size of the crop, it will depend on if we have the room to grow additional vegetables or leave some out that season. Usually during the summer months we grow corn, pumpkins, butternut squash, lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, string beans, and potatoes.
In addition to saving you money, especially if you have a large family, there are a variety of vegetable gardens you can construct and make use of depending on the climate you are in and the current weather patterns for any given season. You could build a raised box garden by simply assembling several planks of wood into a raised box. You could build a terraced garden similar to what the Maya civilization used to build in the highlands of the Mesoamericas. Or you could even build a miniature farm/large flat garden growing a whole variety of vegetables.
If you do decide to grow a vegetable garden to help off-set the costs you would have spent at the local grocery store in the produce section, here is a golden rule for growing one of my favorite vegetables.
Corn; knee high by the fourth of July.
