Owning a dog can be a rewarding experience. Dogs are apart of ones family. They share with us, during our days of happiness as well as our days of sadness. Dogs grow old with us, and mature alongside our children. Whenever we have stressful days at work, we know there is a furry, loving animal, waiting for us in our home.

Dogs breeds come in all shapes and sizes. Each dog breed has its own history and was bred for a specific purpose. If we do not utilize our dogs for what they were bred for, you could say that we are doing them an injustice.

Dogs were not bred to lounge around the house all day, waiting for their owners to come home and feed them. For instance, if a dog owner buys a herding dog breed such as a Bouvier des Flandres, that dog would be expected to do what its ancestors were bred to do…to herd.

Dogs were bred for specific purposes, one such purpose is for personal protection and property protection. In the content that follows, we will be highlighting two such dog breeds. Some dog breeds were bred to be “alert” type dogs such as the German Pinscher, dogs that would sound the alert whenever their suspicions were aroused. While Other dog breeds would be a more “in your face” type of dog, if you ever stumbled onto its property, such as the English Mastiff.

We will be highlighting two dog breeds of various temperaments with instincts such as, “Guarding” and “Watch Dog/Alert” instincts. The risks of owning and utilizing multiple dog breeds for guarding, protection, and any other function, rests wholly on the shoulders of the owner.

English Mastiff
The English Mastiff is one of the oldest of all the dog breeds. It has its roots coming from lines of dogs that were used as war dogs during Roman times. They were used to fight wild animals in colosseums and to carry supplies for infantrymen during wars on the front battle lines. What they lack in speed, they make up for in brute power and sheer size to overthrow any would be foe.

German Pinscher
The German Pinscher is an extremely alert dog breed. German Pinschers have been used as “ratters” meaning they would find, catch, and dispatch small rodents when they would find them. Peasants in rural towns during medieval times would use them to help catch small mammals and have even used them as herders and flock guardians.
