Another Malaysian Airliner, Flight MH17 this time, was supposedly shot down over Eastern Ukraine on Thursday July, 17th 2014, some 60km from the Russian border. The flight contained 283 passengers and 15 crew members. They were being flown from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Debris and bodies of passengers are said to be strewn about over a debris field covering several miles.
Flight MH17 was supposed to enter Russian airspace at 5:20pm local time but never did, and the last “known” position of the plane was over Ukraine. MH17 was flying at an altitude of over 30,000 feet, some six miles, when it was supposedly struck by a guided missile.
There are claims that this commercial airliner was downed by a Buk surface to air missile system operated by terrorists. Buk missile systems were first designed by the Soviet Union, and later the Russian Federation in the late seventies and are operated upon mobile launch vehicles. If this was an act of terror and not an act of war, then the terrorists somehow got their hands on sophisticated Russian military equipment and must of been trained by someone in order to operate such machines.
Both the separatists and the rebels seem to be keeping their heads down on this one, while air transport departments around the globe are routing flights away from the area. Though why they weren’t being routed around this area in the first place is beyond me. I mean, it only makes sense to fly commercial airliners over active war zones. Maybe this plane was outfitted as a chem-plane and the Russians didn’t want any of that spraying over their homeland.
